Straus has always maintained strict safety standards. It has been a consistent aspect of our company philosophy even before safety became a highly visible issue in heavy industrial plants. Our employees believe this to be an added benefit of their employment at Straus. Also it is a main reason why we are approved to work in so many plants and with so many companies that put heavy emphasis on safety.

Our Excellent Safety Record

We were recently honored by the Mechanical Contractors Association of America for being one of the safest contractors within their organization over recent years. In addition, the Houston Business Roundtable has recognized us for customer satisfaction awards for each of the last five years, which is the length of time this award program has been in existence. One of the key factors in winning this recognition is safety exhibited within the customer’s facilities.

Our Experience Modification Rate (EMR) has always been low — which by industry standards is excellent and reflects a history of safe operations. This EMR is a number that is used by the insurance industry to adjust company paid premiums. The lower the EMR, the lower the rates. Our low modifier and the resulting savings in workmen’s compensation insurance costs result in savings that are passed along to our customers.

Straus Systems helps keep Houstonians cool with HVAC services

Straus Systems provides design and drawing development for heating, ventilating, air conditioning (HVAC) and refrigeration. It provides the equipment, installation and startup required to give its customers a complete operating system, including fabrication. It also provides service and contract maintenance.

Straus Systems’ corporate headquarters includes a 46,000-square-foot shop and 16,000-square-foot office located on a five-acre site in Stafford.

Founded in 1933, the company has many long-time employees. The average length of employment is more than 22 years.

Straus Systems started out selling and installing air-conditioning units for homes. As Houston grew and there were developments in equipment design, the company began servicing large commercial and industrial projects.

The company added process refrigeration and the fabrication and installation of process ductwork and eventually built a fabrication facility that has the capability to cut and weld sheet metal to any size or configuration needed by its customers.

Currently, the company works in all facets of the commercial market such as medical, office, churches and private schools. It also ships work overseas.

“We have also ventured into tenant work — going into existing and new facilities to finish out the floor space,” says Rick Beeler, president.

One of Straus’ most recent jobs was working on ChevronTexaco Corp.’s complex at 1500 Louisiana.

The company’s revenue for last year was $26.5 million.

2006 SMACNA Safety Awards Winners

2006 SMACNA Safety Awards Program – A Huge Success
The results for the 2006 SMACNA Safety Excellence Award Program (SSEAP) represent over 56 million man-hours worked in calendar year 2005. 298 members responded to the 2006 survey, a great improvement from last year. The SSEAP is a vital program which enables SMACNA to track the safety history of the industry, and all SMACNA members are encouraged to participate. The SSEAP evaluates safety data, identifies trends, and recognizes SMACNA members with the lowest incidence rates in the prior calendar year. Additionally, with safety becoming more critical to a winning job proposal, the ability to advertise a successful safety program as a “SMACNA National Award Winner” has shown to be an important marketing tool for many past winners.

Submitting the survey form “on-line” has proven to be an easy and efficient way to get involved in the process, and this year over one-quarter of responding firms completed the survey form on-line through the SMACNA Website (www.smacna.org), an all time high. All participating firms will receive a certificate of appreciation and a free copy of the SMACNA Hazcom Toolbox Talks manual, a great resource to promote chemical safety in the workplace. Of particular note, 65 member companies reported “Zero Injury Incidents”, a commendable accomplishment. These 65 companies will receive recognition awards in the mail.

The detailed safety statistics are still being evaluated and the resultant report will be presented when SMACNA publishes the 2006 Safety Profile, but we are proud to announce the winners in the various man-hour categories. The top three chapters with significant participation also receive an award. The 2006 award winners are presented below. First place winners in each category will receive their awards and be recognized in October during SMACNA’s annual convention in Phoenix, Arizona. The other winners will receive their awards via mail.
